Thos Begbie Secures Major Global Furnace Projects

South Africa’s Thos Begbie, a foundry and engineering company based in Middelburg, has been awarded two significant international contracts, both scheduled for completion in the third quarter of this year. The projects highlight the company’s growing reputation as a trusted supplier in the global smelting industry.

Global Contracts: Australia and Canada

The first project involves a complete rebuild of a copper smelting furnace for commodities giant BHP’s Olympic Dam operation in Australia—one of the world’s most important deposits of copper, gold, and uranium.

The second project calls for the production of a new electric arc platinum group metal (PGM) smelter furnace for Glencore’s Sudbury integrated nickel operation in Canada.

Sales manager Scott Paterson explained that Thos Begbie was awarded the contracts because it is the preferred supplier for both clients, having successfully delivered numerous projects for them in the past. He noted that the company’s specialised processes, expertise, and rigorous quality workflows were key factors in securing the deals.

Positive Outlook for PGMs

Paterson pointed out that if the PGM market, particularly platinum, continues its upward trajectory, the foundry sector should see increased investment and capital projects to meet rising demand. He cited Valterra Platinum and other producers as examples of market drivers that could sustain growth.

In anticipation, Thos Begbie has reinvested in its Middelburg facility, adding advanced computer-numerical control (CNC) machines to boost capacity and improve output quality. A new workshop has also been opened to support the existing foundry, increasing steel manufacturing capacity to 20 tonnes per month and strengthening its role as a workshop supplier.

Quality Enhancements and Innovation

Paterson highlighted that the company’s non-destructive examination and metallurgical testing protocols have elevated product quality and acceptance criteria. A redesign of cast cooling elements has improved the operation and campaign life of copper coolers in furnaces, enhancing efficiency and durability.

Additionally, Thos Begbie’s in-house quality management system has been upgraded to meet stricter client specifications, reinforcing its reputation for reliability and precision.

Looking Ahead

With these improvements and global contracts in hand, Thos Begbie is well-positioned for a stronger 2026 order book. The company’s blend of technical expertise, reinvestment in capacity, and commitment to quality places it at the forefront of the foundry and smelting industry, both locally and internationally.

Thos Begbie’s success underscores the importance of innovation, reinvestment, and quality assurance in maintaining competitiveness in global resource markets. By securing major projects in Australia and Canada, while simultaneously expanding its Middelburg operations, the company is not only strengthening its international footprint but also contributing to South Africa’s reputation for engineering excellence.
