Impala Rustenburg’s Education Support Delivers Strong Matric Results

Impala Rustenburg’s ongoing investment in mine-community schools is paying off, with several high schools supported by the company recording impressive improvements in the 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations. Four schools achieved pass rates above 90%, while Waterkloof Hills High School celebrated a near-perfect pass rate in its very first Grade 12 cohort—a milestone achievement for a growing school serving the local community.

Steady Progress Across Schools

The latest matric results reflect steady progress across Rustenburg-area schools.

  • Meriti High School showed one of the most notable improvements, increasing its pass rate by 18% compared to the previous year.
  • On average, Impala-supported schools performed 4% above the national pass rate, with a continued rise in the number of distinctions achieved year-on-year.

This upward trend highlights the impact of targeted academic interventions and sustained support from Impala Rustenburg.

Academic Interventions Driving Success

Much of this progress stems from Impala Rustenburg’s academic support programme, which includes Saturday and supplementary classes for Grade 12 learners at schools such as Sunrise View, Freedom Park, Keledi Secondary, and Bafokeng High School.

These sessions focus on critical subjects—mathematics, physical sciences, English, and geography—and have contributed to improved pass rates over the past three years. By reinforcing classroom learning, the programme helps learners build confidence and achieve stronger outcomes.

Celebrating Learner Achievements

Beyond overall pass rates, individual success stories showcase the programme’s impact:

  • Omphemetse Tshenepe from Sunrise View Secondary School was recognised as a top-performing learner and is a previous recipient of the prestigious Peter Davey Award for academic excellence.
  • Warona Mathuloe from Meriti Secondary School achieved an outstanding eight distinctions.
  • Prudence Tshenepe and Koketso Motshoane from Sunrise View Secondary School each earned seven distinctions.
  • Idlett Lebajoa from Platinum Village Secondary School also achieved seven distinctions.

Impala Rustenburg’s chief executive, Moses Motlhageng, applauded these learners: “They are an inspiration to many young people in our mining communities. These improvements are the result of commitment from learners, teachers, school leadership and our partners.”

Education as a Sustainability Strategy

Impala Rustenburg’s school-support programme aligns with the broader social performance and sustainability strategy of its holding company, Impala Platinum Holdings Limited (Implats).

This commitment goes beyond academics:

  • Infrastructure upgrades improve hygiene, safety, and the overall learning environment.
  • Projects stimulate local economic participation by creating jobs and supporting SMMEs during implementation.
  • The broader mine-community strategy integrates skills development and workforce readiness, cultivating a capable, future-ready generation.

By investing in education, Implats reinforces community resilience and long-term sustainability.

Holistic Community Development

Impala Rustenburg’s programme reaches both primary and secondary schools, focusing on:

  • Academic support and enrichment.
  • Leadership and governance training.
  • Infrastructure improvements.
  • Holistic learner development.

This integrated approach demonstrates the company’s commitment to sustainable community development, ensuring that education remains a cornerstone of opportunity for mine-community youth.
