Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly shifted from a futuristic concept to a technology woven into everyday life. A recent survey by South African research firm infoQuest offers a revealing snapshot of how the nation is engaging with AI—and the anxieties that come with it.
📚 AI Is Now Common Knowledge
The survey shows that AI is no longer niche.
- 39% of respondents describe themselves as “Very familiar” with AI.
- 30% say they are “Exceptionally familiar.”
This means nearly 70% of South Africans surveyed see AI as a mainstream tool, not an obscure innovation.
⚙️ The AI Ecosystem: Tools in Daily Use
Adoption is widespread, with 90% of respondents actively using AI technologies. Among the most popular tools:
- ChatGPT: 88% usage, making it the clear market leader.
- Meta AI: 79% usage, showing strong traction.
- Gemini: 51% usage, highlighting diversity in the market.
- Microsoft Copilot and Grammarly: lower adoption rates, but still notable for their specialized applications.
This paints a picture of a competitive ecosystem where multiple platforms coexist, each serving different needs—from writing assistance to workplace productivity.
🌍 What This Means for South Africa
The findings suggest that South Africans are not only aware of AI but are actively integrating it into their personal and professional lives. However, widespread adoption also raises questions about:
- Job security in an AI-driven economy.
- Digital literacy gaps between those who embrace AI and those left behind.
- Ethical concerns around privacy, bias, and accountability.
